    Arrival in Panauti

    Sacred Rivers & Newari Culture

Panauti has long been regarded as a sacred place because of its location at the confluence of the Roshi Khola and Punyamata Khola rivers. According to local belief, the mythical Lilawati River also joins the two rivers invisibly beneath the town, creating a sacred triveni, or three-river confluence.

This sacred setting has made Panauti an important pilgrimage destination for centuries. Visitors can observe traditional religious practices, shrines, offerings and rituals that continue to form an important part of local life.

Continue walking through the traditional neighbourhoods, where red-brick houses feature carved wooden windows, latticed balconies and distinctive Newari architectural details. Begin your morning with a guided heritage walk through the historic centre of Bandipur. The pedestrian-friendly main street is lined with traditional Newari houses, many featuring carved wooden windows, ornate balconies and red-brick façades that reflect the town’s prosperous trading history.

Bandipur once played an important role as a trading centre between the Indian plains and Tibet, with merchants transporting goods such as salt, wool and spices through the region. Your guide will introduce you to the town’s history, architecture and traditional way of life as you walk through its narrow lanes and peaceful courtyards.

Look out for distinctive peacock windows, carved wooden struts, traditional stone water spouts and small neighbourhood shrines. These details reflect the remarkable craftsmanship and cultural traditions that have been preserved in Bandipur for generations.

Khadga Devi Temple & Local Culture

Continue to the Khadga Devi Temple, one of Bandipur’s important religious sites and a shrine associated with Goddess Durga. The temple holds particular importance during Dashain, Nepal’s major Hindu festival, when devotees visit to perform religious rituals and seek blessings.

Your guide will explain the traditions and local beliefs connected with the temple while introducing you to the spiritual side of Bandipur. From its elevated setting, you can also enjoy views over the surrounding hills and valley.

    Himalayan Panorama & Scenic Viewpoints

Continue to several scenic viewpoints around Bandipur, where the surrounding landscape opens towards the Marsyangdi River Valley, terraced hillsides and distant mountain ranges.

On a clear day, the northern horizon may reveal spectacular views of the Annapurna, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges. The visibility of individual peaks depends on weather and atmospheric conditions, but the combination of green hills, terraced farmland and distant snow-covered mountains makes Bandipur a rewarding Himalayan viewpoint.

    Tundikhel

Take a short walk to Tundikhel, the large open plateau on the northern side of Bandipur. Historically used as a parade ground and community gathering place, Tundikhel is now one of the town’s most popular places for enjoying the surrounding landscape.

The open setting provides wide views across the hills and valleys, and on clear days you can enjoy an impressive Himalayan panorama. It is also a pleasant place to observe local life, with residents gathering, children playing and visitors taking time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

For those interested in experiencing one of the newer attractions in the area, an optional cable car excursion can be arranged, subject to operating conditions and availability. The cable car provides a different perspective of the surrounding hills and valleys and offers an enjoyable addition to Bandipur’s traditional heritage experience.

    Optional Siddha Cave Excursion

Another optional excursion is a visit to Siddha Cave, one of Nepal’s well-known limestone caves located below Bandipur. The cave contains impressive natural formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, created over thousands of years.

The visit involves walking and uneven surfaces, so it is best suited to travellers who are comfortable with a short adventure-style excursion. Your guide will assist you during the visit and explain the natural and local significance of the cave.

    Local Life & Leisure

Throughout the day, take time to interact with the friendly people of Bandipur and observe the town’s traditional way of life. You may find local artisans working with wood, textiles or metal, while small handicraft shops offer locally made products and souvenirs.

Today’s journey offers a fascinating introduction to Nepal’s rich cultural heritage and the harmonious coexistence of Hinduism and Buddhism, reflected in its ancient temples, stupas, palaces and living religious traditions.

Swayambhunath Stupa – The Sacred Monkey Temple

Your first destination is Swayambhunath Stupa, popularly known as the Monkey Temple. Perched on a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, this ancient Buddhist monument is one of Nepal’s most revered religious sites. The ascent takes you up the famous 365 stone steps, passing through a peaceful wooded area inhabited by the playful monkeys that have given the site its popular name. As you climb, the views across the valley gradually unfold.

At the summit, the magnificent white stupa is crowned by a gilded spire featuring the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, symbolising wisdom, compassion and awareness. Colourful prayer flags flutter in the breeze, while prayer wheels, shrines and monasteries create a deeply spiritual atmosphere. From the hilltop, enjoy panoramic views across the Kathmandu Valley, with its historic settlements, terraced fields and surrounding hills. Your guide will explain the religious symbolism, history and cultural significance of this remarkable sacred site.

Patan Durbar Square – A Living Museum of Newari Art

Continue to Patan Durbar Square, located in the historic city of Lalitpur, also known as the “City of Beauty.” Patan is renowned for its exceptional Newari architecture, traditional craftsmanship and remarkable concentration of temples, palaces and courtyards. Walking through the square feels like entering a living museum, where centuries-old artistic traditions remain an important part of everyday cultural life.

Explore the magnificent Krishna Mandir, an outstanding stone temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, and admire the intricate carvings that decorate its structure. Visit the historic Patan Palace Museum, housed within the former royal palace complex, and discover the artistic and cultural legacy of the Malla period. Along the way, admire traditional courtyards, ancient water spouts, finely carved wooden windows and temple struts decorated with religious and mythical figures. Your guide will bring the history of Patan to life through stories of its kings, artisans, religious traditions and remarkable artistic heritage.

After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal’s most revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centres in South Asia and attracts devotees from Nepal, India and beyond.

Pashupatinath Temple – Sacred Hindu Heritage

Although entry to the main temple is restricted to Hindus, visitors can explore the surrounding temple complex and admire its traditional pagoda-style architecture, shrines and religious monuments. Along the Bagmati River, the ghats are an important part of Hindu religious life, and you may witness traditional cremation ceremonies taking place according to ancient customs.

The complex is also home to sadhus, Hindu ascetics who follow a life of spiritual devotion and renunciation. Your guide will explain the significance of the temple, its mythology, religious traditions and the rituals that continue to make Pashupatinath a living centre of faith.

Boudhanath Stupa – The Spiritual Heart of Tibetan Buddhism

Conclude your cultural exploration at the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in the world and the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The enormous white dome, crowned by a golden tower and the watchful eyes of Buddha, creates one of Kathmandu’s most distinctive and atmospheric landmarks.

Join local pilgrims as they walk the traditional clockwise Kora around the stupa, turning prayer wheels and reciting sacred mantras. The surrounding monasteries, colourful prayer flags, traditional Tibetan shops and Buddhist artefact stores add to the vibrant spiritual character of the area. Take time to observe the daily rhythm of pilgrimage and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this important centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
