Trip Overview

The Upper Dolpo Trek Nepal takes you into a remote corner of western Nepal where high mountain trails connect traditional villages, ancient monasteries, dry valleys, and dramatic Himalayan landscapes. This 23-day journey follows a carefully planned route through Dunai, Tarakot, Laina Odar, Nawarpani, Dho Tarap, Tokyu, Saldang, Namrung, Shey Gompa, Phoksundo Lake, Ringmo, Chhepka, and Juphal. Along the way, you cross three major high passes—Jyanta La Pass, Sela Pass, and Nagdalo La—while experiencing the distinctive Tibetan-influenced culture and mountain lifestyle of Dolpo.

The adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you complete a guided heritage tour before receiving a trek briefing and preparing for the journey. A scenic flight takes you to Nepalgunj, followed by a flight to Juphal, the gateway to the trekking region. From Juphal, you walk to Dunai and gradually move deeper into Dolpa, following the Thuli Bheri River and passing through increasingly rugged mountain terrain.

Dunai to Dho Tarap: Entering Upper Dolpo

The walking section begins at Dunai, where the trail follows the river towards Tarakot. The route then continues through Laina Odar and Nawarpani, with the landscape changing as the valley rises. River crossings, steep hillsides, rocky trails, and scattered settlements create a sense of increasing distance from the developed areas of Nepal.

From Nawarpani, the trail continues towards Dho Tarap, one of the most distinctive settlements on the Upper Dolpo route. The valley opens into a wider high-altitude landscape surrounded by dry hills and rugged mountains. Traditional houses, cultivated fields, monasteries, and local communities provide an opportunity to see how people have adapted their lives to this challenging environment.

After exploring the Dho Tarap area, the trek continues to Tokyu, where the landscape becomes increasingly open and alpine. From here, the route heads towards the first major high-pass section of the journey.

Jyanta La Pass, Dobhan, Saldang and Namrung

The trail climbs from Tokyu towards Jyanta La Phedi before crossing Jyanta La Pass (approx. 5,220 m / 17,126 ft). The ascent is demanding, with altitude and changing mountain conditions requiring a steady pace. From the pass, the trail descends towards Dobhan, offering broad views across the surrounding high valleys.

The journey then continues towards Saldang, a significant settlement in Upper Dolpo. Traditional stone and mud houses, agricultural terraces, monasteries, chortens, and prayer walls form part of the village landscape. The settlement provides a closer look at the cultural traditions and daily life that have developed in the high valleys of Dolpo.

From Saldang, the route continues towards Namrung, passing through rugged terrain and remote mountain valleys. This section combines demanding walking with changing views of the surrounding highlands. The route then heads towards Sela Pass, preparing you for another major section of the Upper Dolpo journey.

Sela Pass and Shey Gompa

The trail crosses Sela Pass (approx. 5,095 m / 16,716 ft) before continuing towards Shey Gompa, one of the important cultural destinations on the route. Located in a dramatic high mountain setting, Shey Gompa is associated with the long-standing Buddhist traditions of the region.

The area around Shey is characterized by bare slopes, rocky peaks, narrow valleys, and a quiet atmosphere far removed from Nepal's busier trekking areas. Visiting Shey Gompa adds an important cultural dimension to the trek, allowing you to experience the religious heritage that remains closely connected with the communities of Upper Dolpo.

From Shey, the route continues towards Nagdalo La, bringing another demanding high-altitude crossing before the descent towards the Phoksundo Valley.

Nagdalo La and the Phoksundo Valley

The trail climbs to Nagdalo La (approx. 5,350 m / 17,552 ft), also known as Kang La, before descending toward Phoksundo Khola Camp. The crossing takes you through exposed high-altitude terrain before the route gradually descends towards Phoksundo Khola Camp. The contrast between the high, dry landscape around the pass and the increasingly greener terrain beyond it makes this section particularly varied.

From Phoksundo Khola Camp, the trail continues towards Phoksundo Lake, one of the best-known natural landmarks of the Dolpo region. Surrounded by steep cliffs and rugged mountains, the lake stands out with its distinctive blue-green water. After several days of high mountain walking, arriving at the lake marks a noticeable change in both scenery and atmosphere.

Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo

The trek includes a dedicated leisure day at Ringmo, allowing you to spend more time around Phoksundo Lake without immediately moving to another camp. Ringmo is a traditional settlement with Tibetan-style architecture and religious monuments, providing another opportunity to experience the cultural character of the region.

The area around Phoksundo also offers a different natural environment from the dry upper valleys. Forested slopes, rocky cliffs, streams, and the lake itself create a varied landscape within Shey-Phoksundo National Park. The combination of natural scenery and local heritage makes this part of the trek an important contrast to the high passes and barren valleys encountered earlier.

Forest Trails to Chhepka and Juphal

After your time at Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo, the route descends towards Chhepka. The landscape gradually becomes greener, with forest trails replacing much of the exposed terrain found at higher elevations. The descent through mountain forests and river valleys provides a welcome change after the demanding high-altitude sections.

From Chhepka, the final trekking day takes you back to Juphal, completing the walking portion of the Upper Dolpo adventure. From Juphal, you fly to Nepalgunj and continue to Kathmandu, subject to local flight schedules and weather conditions.

A planned buffer day in Kathmandu provides flexibility in case of flight delays and also leaves time for optional sightseeing or relaxation before your departure from Nepal.

Culture and Landscapes of Upper Dolpo

The Upper Dolpo Trek is shaped by both its natural surroundings and the people who live along its remote valleys. Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Bön influences, monasteries, chortens, prayer flags, traditional homes, and high-altitude farming practices are encountered at different stages of the route.

The landscape changes repeatedly throughout the journey. The lower river valleys around Dunai and Tarakot gradually give way to the broad high valley of Dho Tarap, the traditional settlements around Saldang and Namrung, the mountain setting of Shey Gompa, and finally the forests and dramatic cliffs surrounding Phoksundo Lake.

The three major crossings—Jyanta La Pass (approx. 5,220 m / 17,126 ft), Sela Pass (approx. 5,095 m / 16,716 ft), and Nagdalo La (approx. 5,350 m / 17,552 ft)—are central features of the route and add a demanding high-altitude dimension to the journey.

With its combination of remote villages, high passes, monasteries, changing mountain landscapes, and Phoksundo Lake, the Upper Dolpo Trek Nepal offers a long and immersive journey through one of the distinctive trekking regions of Nepal. The route is particularly suited to travellers who want to spend extended time in the mountains, encounter traditional Himalayan communities, and explore a trekking route that is very different from Nepal's more established trekking corridors.

From Kathmandu to Juphal and Dunai, across the valleys of Dho Tarap, Saldang, and Namrung, through Shey Gompa and the high passes, and onward to Phoksundo Lake, Ringmo, Chhepka, and Juphal, every section contributes something different to the experience. The Upper Dolpo Trek Nepal brings these landscapes and communities together in one complete Himalayan journey.
